Welcome to Artigarvan Community Nursery - Where Learning is Fun !!

Welcome to our special part of the website. First of all we have our latest inspection report for you to see.  (The Nursery has separate inspections from the rest of the school).  Then there is our latest newsletter for you to browse and finally there are some photos.  Our main photo gallery is within the big photo gallery on the home page.  We intend to update this on a regular basis so please come back to see how we are getting on.

During a survey inspection visit to the nursery unit in Artigarvan Primary School on 28 May 2008 the following strengths were noted by the DENI inspector.

  • The nursery unit has a very positive ethos; relationships at all levels are very good.  Effective use is made of photographs, newsletters and displays of the children's art work to inform the parents about the life and work of the nursery unit.
  • The staff have created a very attractive and stimulating learning environment, both indoors and in the outside play space.  There are good opportunities for learning in all areas of the pre-school curriculum.  Particular strengths are the development of the children's language skills and the promotion of their understanding of the world around them.
  • The daily session is well managed and provides long periods of uninterrupted play; routines are unobtrusive and used effectively to support the children's learning and personal development.
  • The interactions between the staff and the children are skilful in promoting co-operative and purposeful play; the programme is carefully planned and the adults observe and record the children's progress, building up very useful profiles of the children's development.
  • A significant minority of the children (38%) are in their penultimate pre-school year.  The staff provide valuable support for these children and for those with special educational needs.
  • The nursery is well-managed and the teacher-in-charge has drafted appropriate action plans which are included in the primary school's development plan; the staff work well as a team and have developed a culture of reflection and self-evaluation leading to improvement.

The quality of education provided in this nursery unit is very good.  The educational and pastoral needs of the children are being well met.
