For the last two weeks our school has been participating in a Sustrans event, The Big Pedal. The aim is to encourage as many children as possible to cycle to school every day for two weeks. There were a lot of schools in the UK taking part and by Wednesday of the 2nd week we were 11th in the region. This was an exciting event and the Nursery children enjoyed taking part. Well done to everyone who put in the effort to use wheels to get to school over the past 10 school days.

We love to hear of pupils excelling at other activities outside of school.  We are extremely proud of our Year 2 pupil who won Most Improved Player of the Year for the under 6s at Strabane Rugby Club.

Well done to our Nursery class and Mrs Kane's class who all participated in the Jo Jingles sessions.  As always, the children all enjoyed these sessions and behaved beautifully, always remembering their manners and singing loud and clear!

In our school we have extremely kind and helpful parents. William kindly offered to bring along a tractor to school for our children to have a look at. The children were filled with excitement as they saw the red Massey sitting in the car park. William carefully explained to the children, the various parts on a tractor and their purposes. You could tell the children were fascinated as their eyes were fixed on William, listening carefully to the information. Lots of our children come from farming backgrounds, they were able to share their own knowledge and experiences.

We left knowing some interesting facts

  • the tractor has 100horsepower
  • it runs on diesel
  • their is a dipstick to check the oil level
  • you can find a toolbox on the front
  • the engine is at the front
  • the exhaust runs up to the side of the window
  • you can attach a link box at the back of the tractor

Each of the children then got a chance to climb up into the tractor and have a look around, there was a lot of excitement to say the least!

A huge thanks to William for taking the time to provide such a fantastic experience for the children in our school!

The boys and girls in Nursery were treated to a visit from a local PSNI Road Safety Officer. Stuart talked to the children about how to stay safe when crossing the road, staying safe in the car and staying safe when cycling their bike. He showed us all the different things he has to wear on his belt and we had a look at his uniform. We were very lucky to get to sit in the Police car and see the flashing lights along with the noisy sirens. Thank you to Stuart for taking the time to talk to the children. His message to the children was: ‘The PSNI are always here to keep you safe.’

Today we had a visit from our local vet, Lindsay from Parkview in Strabane. She brought a very well-behaved puppy with her too! We learned so much today about farm animals, pets and exotic animals too! Lindsay told us about the tools she uses to check the animals, they looked similar to those found in our doctors. The children asked fantastic questions at the end. Jonny wanted to know what the biggest animal Lindsay had helped was- to our surprise, she told us about how she had helped insert a micro-chip into an elephant which was with a circus in Strabane!

This week at STEM we worked on 2D and 3D shapes. We used matchsticks and play-doh to create 3D shapes such as cubes, cuboid, prisms and pyramids. We were then set a challenge to build a structure using marshmallows and at least 10 cocktail sticks that would be able to withstand an earthquake!
