Every Wednesday we go to Mrs Kane's classroom and we have great fun doing art with her.

We have been using lots of different materials to create a beautiful Autumn picture. To begin with, we talked about creating a pathway. We experimented with drawing the lines at different angles to achieve the correct look. Next we needed to draw a country house, full of lovely details such as windows and plants. Using chalks, we managed to create the look of a leafy path by smudging the colours together. Then using crayons we completed the sky and the house. By mixing autumn colours on a sponge we managed to achieve the look of autumn trees. Finally we added trees to the pathway, and their shadows using charcoal.

Take a look at our fabulous Autumn pictures, aren’t they amazing?

10th Nov 2021

Our topic for this term is People Who Help Us and over the past few weeks we have been taking part in an art project with Mrs Preston on a Wednesday afternoon.  We worked in groups to plan, design and create a lifeboat.  The first week we planned what resources we would need to make our lifeboat and what each resource would be used for.  The next few weeks we used our imagination and creativity to create the lifeboat using junk art, paint, glue and other resources.

Today we were able to present the boat to our class and tell them lots of details about the name of the boat, the captain’s name, how many crew it had and one group even told us the measurements of its height, width and length.

The most exciting part of our project was testing if our boats floated or sank.  We are pleased to say that most of our boats floated and only a few toppled over onto their side.  We talked about why they toppled over and we would consider this when completing a similar project. โ›ด๐Ÿ›ณ

Well done to all the boys and girls for their fantastic team work and excellent presentation skills in front of their peers. Super work! โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ

A few years ago we applied for funding from The Donnelly Group Foundation to enhance our equipment for outdoors.  We were nominated to receive the funding at that time but due to Covid19 we were unable to use the funding until this year.

We decided to buy a permanent climbing wall and tunnel that will be available for the children to use every day.  This was purchased from Creative Activity in Londonderry and we used the funding to pay for this alongside some nursery funds.

We are absolutely delighted with the product and we know it will enhance the children's physical development and also increase their confidence in climbing on aparatus.

A big thank you to The Donnelly Group Foundation for their funding and also to Gavin at Creative Activity for helping us with our order.

We will enjoy lots of climbing and crawling through the tunnel.

Today we were very excited as we got new road markings and car parking spaces in our playground.  Yesterday Jason from Allplay came and did a fantastic job of laying our new playground markings.  This will help us remember where to ride our bikes and trikes and teach us how to cross the road safely at the zebra crossing.

Thank you Jason for a super job!! The funding for this has come from the build up on nursery funds that our parents contribute to each month, so thank you to you also.

I'm sure the kids will have lots of fun with this over the year!

We had so much fun on our Autumn walk. As we walked along the footpath we noticed the blackberries at the tops of the hedgerows. Some children thought they were for the giraffes but we eventually came around to the idea of leaving them for the birds. The blackberries were ripe and ready for us to pick as we walked further, we even heard the river flowing beside us. After a steep climb up a hill we spied conkers on the chestnut tree! A few had fallen down so we were able to investigate them.

What a busy morning we had, our wellies came in very handy and the children were glad to have their milk and snack on our return!

Perhaps you could continue the search for signs of Autumn at the weekend, after all, your children are now experts in berry picking and conker spotting!

Mrs Preston had some little visitors at Nursery so we headed over for a little peak. To our surprise, three fluffy ducklings were waddling around! We got a close look at their features, we noticed they had webbed feet to help them in the water and they were surprisingly soft to touch. They didn’t like a lot of noise, so using quiet voices and still hands we observed closely. Mrs Preston refilled their water and they loved drinking the fresh water, splashing around and stretching their wings. This was so much fun and a great end to our week!

This term our topic is “Let’s get growing.”We have been learning all about life cycles. We have learnt all about the life cycle of frogs and ducks. We got to see tadpoles and hold some ducklings. Look at our photos below, the boys and girls had a quacking time. ๐Ÿธ๐Ÿฆ†๐Ÿธ๐Ÿฆ†

A big thank you to Mrs Preston and Mrs McGinnis for allowing us to see these animals.

We had the best fun day ever- we got slightly wet in such a ‘heavy down pour’ of water guns ๐Ÿ˜‰ It is even more fun when you are allowed to soak the big people in your class!

This week the pre-school children who are coming to our school in September went over to the main school and had their first experience of a school dinner. They all did exceptionally well and had a fun time. Well done boys and girls! ๐Ÿ˜

The boys and girls absolutely loved our visit from Stephanie from Time Steps.  The session was very interactive and engaging.  She even wanted to trade one of our year 5 girls for a calf! Tempting, but I declined the offer ๐Ÿ˜…

We would highly recommend Time Steps and will definitely be using them for future topics.  It really brought our current topic to life for the boys and girls.

The pictures provide a glimpse of just how much fun we had - so many giggles too!

Parents of Artigarvan Primary School and Community Nursery,

Our PTA would like to trial a Uniform Recycling System at the end of June.

If anyone has any pieces of uniform that they no longer need if they could kindly remove their child’s name from the clothing and send to school before the term finishes on 29th June.

The PTA will sort all the items that have been sent into school and let you know how you can purchase items before we return for the new school year in September.

All items will cost £1/£2 and all money raised will go to school funds.

We know buying uniforms can be costly so this will be a good way to cut down the cost of purchasing uniforms while supporting our school at the same time.

Thank you ๐Ÿ˜Š

Staff from Artigarvan PS very proudly present Emma McCann from Cancer Focus NI with £1500 raised through donations in lieu of Christmas presents and the ‘March a Million’ step challenge. Thank you to everyone who supported us in memory of our former teacher Mrs Craig. Also pictured in the photograph are David an Olivia Craig (Mrs Craig’s husband and daughter). We would also like to thank David and Olivia for joining us for the presentation.

Here’s a little update from our greenhouse and planter:

The weeds have been cleared and our sunflower seeds that we planted are coming along nicely (see the attached pictures).

We also planted some onions and spread some more wildflower seeds kindly gifted by the council. Families can call into the reception of the council offices and pick up their free pack of wildflower seeds (while stocks last). Thank you so much to the council for our seeds.

In class Mrs Pollock read a lovely story about sunflowers ๐ŸŒป and told all the boys and girls about a famous sunflower painting by Vincent Van Gogh. The boys and girls then designed their own sunflower pictures using chalk based on the work of Van Gogh.

During term three our class have been reading ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ by Roald Dahl. In this book George makes a number of medicines, all of which have different effects on the people that take them. On Friday Mr Campbell brewed some of his own concoctions for everyone to try. Have a look at the pictures below, can you tell that the children enjoyed these?
