On Monday 10th June 2019 the eco committee and Mrs Pollock showed two Inspectors around the school and its' grounds. They had to "sell" the amazing work, to the inspectors, that the teachers and pupils do within the school involving the eco topics eg litter picking, composting, recycling , sustrans, Roots of Empathy and growing plants. The eco committee did a wonderful job explaining everything and we were awarded our third green flag with recommendations.

P2/3 enjoyed a visit from Environmentalist Lynn Greer who talked to us about different forest animals and how they hibernate for the winter. Did you know that bats wrap themselves up in their wings to keep warm and hibernate in trees? Hedgehogs snuggle up in a ball in the autumn leaves to hibernate. Their hearts only beat twice a minute when in hibernation and they wake up in Spring. We enjoyed making our own leaf crowns. Have a look!

Today year 5/6 had a visit from Lynn Greer, an environmentalist who works with the Pushkin Trust. She talked to us about soil which she called “green gold”.

We learned how precious soil is because only 3% of the world has soil which we can use to grow things. She told us that there are about 12 different types of soil in Ireland.

We had a go at making soil. We added sand, clay, water, small fragments of rock, leaves, air and salt for the minerals. We learned about different vegetables and whether they grow above or below the ground. We also learned about animals which we have in Northern Ireland and whether they live above or below the ground.
