In our school the children have many opportunities to play a range of musical instruments. Darren came to school to distribute certificates to children who have achieved awards in playing the chanter. Well done to all of the children for their hard work and dedication.

This term Year 1 have been learning about various types of homes. So far we have sorted animals into groups such as mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects or humans. We then thought about where different animals and people live. For homework the children were asked to be creative and transform a shoebox into a home. Take a look at the fantastic work they have created!

We recently had a special visitor to the school. Genevieve the Goat, from the Action Cancer charity, came to the school to talk about ways of keeping healthy.
Genevieve's tips for a fun and healthy way of life included:

  • Eating five portions of fruit and vegetables every day;
  • Drinking lots of water;
  • Being healthy and active.

Visit https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/5-a-day-and-your-family/ for more information on ensuring you and your children get their 5 a day!

To celebrate World book day we made our very own bookmarks to use when reading our books at home or during guided reading. Our favourite time to read stories is at bedtime so we came to school wearing our pyjamas and brought along our favourite book to read.

Our Year 1 children are taking part in a 4 week programme of Relax kids. This has been a fantastic time for our children to unwind and focus simply on being relaxed and taking time out from a busy day. Here’s what our children have to say about it!

“We get to play fun games!”- Sarah

“You get to relax when the music plays.”- Melissa

”I like the lavender smell because it makes me feel happy.”- Max

Today we celebrated Safer Internet Day and had lots of fun using our class iPads. We thought about how much time we spend online and decided that maybe it's a bit too long. In class, we played lots of games which we could play at home as an alternative to going online. Using a timer we were able to time how long we spent on the iPads and then move onto a different activity. The children thoroughly enjoyed doing Yoga in class, the link is attached for you to access this at home.

The theme this year was all about 'consent' and having a choice about what is shared online. Believe or not, some Year 1 children knew about posting videos onto Snapchat!! Our children have gone home with a very important message- WE CARE ABOUT WHAT YOU SHARE! Please consider this before posting online. Take a look at what fun we got up to today!

Last year Ronan delivered a fantastic programme 'ditch the stabilisers' to the Year 1 & 2 children. We are delighted to now offer this to our new Year 1 children in school following the previous success. This is a practical session lasting around 45 minutes, held during the school day, where parents come along and support their child in the process of riding without stabilisers. Ronan will be leading the session, supporting parents on what to do at home in relation to your child's progress throughout the day. This is a fantastic opportunity in preparation for the Spring, to enable your child to learn to ride their bike independently.

Due to the nature of the programme only 15 children will be able to take part in this activity over 3 sessions. Sandra will be sending out a letter in the coming weeks so keep your eyes peeled as places will be secured on a first come basis. If demand is high for this programme we will consider running another session. Please note, this is specifically for Year 1 children however if places become available Year 2/3 children will then be offered.

Parents must attend the session as it is tailored towards supporting parents in this process. Children must bring their own bikes and helmets to school on the day.

We had a learning experience day on Friday where the children were invited to bring a bear to school. Throughout our topic the children had explored different bears including; polar, grizzly and teddy bears! When the children arrived with their teddies we read to them during our Guided reading, the bears sat in our carpet spaces while we ate our snack and they sat on our tables keeping look-out while we went outside to play.

During circle time we discussed what kind of bear we had brought, named them and told everyone what we used our bears for. Some bears helped us with emotions, when the children felt sad they often cuddled their bears. Others played imaginary games with their bears. To end the day we had a bear banquet, full of bear-themed treats and games. The naughty bears were up to no good and we had trouble keeping them on the ground at the end of it all!

Thank you to all of our wonderful parents for engaging in this activity with your child at home.
